EDITORIAL

We were quite proud of our special issue in June for our Queen's Jubilee and we hope that you also enjoyed the contents. It does not seem fifty years ago that the Queen came to the throne on February 6th 1952, the day of her father's death, a sad day for her. This year's celebrations again go hand in hand with grief as she has had to attend the funerals of both her mother and sister. This magazine was not around in 1952 as we have only been in 26 years of production so I have had to trawl through newspaper reports for one of the articles in this issue. I hope it will bring back happy memories for some of the older folk about people they knew in 1952 Carterton. To finish off this special year I would be grateful for more memories from those around here in 1952 to put in the December issue. Photos of that year especially appreciated. Send them to The Editor, 6 Butlers Drive, Carterton, Oxon OX 18 3QU by October 28th.

NO FLAGS FOR THE QUEEN

Dear Editor

The Queen's Silver Jubilee 25 years ago was a cause for great celebrations in Carterton, the biggest one was a town show. It felt as if everyone was at the show and on the streets. The Show was such a success it led to Carterton Gala being held for many years on the Recreation Ground and when that discontinued was followed by the Carterton Fun Day for 5 years. In 1977 the houses, shops and roads were festooned with flags and bunting as we celebrated the Queen's 25 years on the throne. So what happened in Carterton to celebrate her 50 years as our Queen? In June a church service, a flower display, a concert, street parties and events organised by clubs and private concerns but no big event or show. No bunting or flags adorning the town centre although there were flags on private houses from porches, door and bedroom windows but the St George cross ones may be for a different event! No bunting on the Town Hall or a flag on their flagpole. Any visitor coming to our town centre would certainly wonder if we knew there was a Golden Jubilee! From DISGUSTED OF CARTERTON MOBILES ON THE MOVE - OR NOT!

Once upon a time there was a community called Kings Court where everyone lived in relative peace. Along came a Wicked Developer who wanted to build retirement homes on the site. Some people thought it might be a good idea, some did not and formed a Committee. The idea was rejected so all breathed a sigh of relief - or so they thought! Then the Developer appealed so the poor community was divided again except this time some people who originally thought it a good idea had reservations now but these are now thought of as being in league with the Developer. People are tetchy, all are living in limbo again waiting for an Inspector's decision, hopefully soon. Who is to blame for this sorry affair? Your guess is as good as mine. All must realise that houses are only temporary dwellings, relationships are more important than money and life is short. And if it aint broke, don't fix it.

A KINGS COURT RESIDENT'S VIEWPOINT

CARTERTON PEOPLE IN THE NEWS

JILL EDWARDS recently attended the European Heart Transplant Games in Austria, joining others who have been given this life-saving operation, showing what can be done with a new lease of life. Jill won gold medals for 100m and 50m breaststroke, 50m crawl in the swimming events. Gold medals for table tennis and shot putt and a silver medal in the badminton doubles. Congratulations to Jill from us all.

KATIE SLADER from Carterton Gymnastics Club, was part of the Northern Ireland team at the recent Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Katie finished 15th overall and qualified for the womens all-round final which came 7th. She was the highest scoring individual in the team even though she was competing for the first time and at 14 years old was the youngest member. Her performance meant she qualified for the final of both the beam, finishing 7th, and floor exercises, coming 8th. She was well supported by members of the club. Our congratulations to our own representative at the Games on a successful performance.

CICELY STOKES is not one who makes great headlines but quietly goes on doing good for others. For many years she has held garage sales in her home to raise money for Sobell House Hospice, which provides free Hospice care for terminally ill cancer patients. Some people make sure that their fund-raising is advertised for their own good. Cicely Stokes is one of a large majority of volunteer workers and charity fund-raisers who do it, unsung, for the good of others. At her last sale she raised £505 for the Hospice.

MAY SATELL with a cash grant from the Carterton Town Council, successfully organised a joint Jubilee party for the Over-60's and the Friends & Neighbours Clubs of Carterton on July 19th for 100 guests. The 5-hour party started with a cold buffet meal catered by Kay Miller, followed by Kym, an Old Tyme Music Hall entertainer, who got everyone joining in with the old songs. Three games of bingo followed, then the Jubilee cake, made by Ann Hall, was cut by founder member of the Over-60's Club, Rose Collinson, and present Chairperson May Satell. The evening ended by all enjoying a dance.

Two weeks after I write this (end of July) I have heard that during August DAVID WENHAM of Carterton, will be cycling about 900 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats and hopes to do it in 8 days. He will be raising money for Oxfam, Christian Aid, Sustrans and children and youth work at St John's Church. We hope that in the December issue we can have a report on this magnificent venture.

WHAT IF? Supposing those people who have had things named after them had put their names to different ones? Would we be wearing a wellington on our heads and balaclavas on our feet, eating a cardigan and wearing a woolly sandwich?

`THE GLORY OF THE GARDEN LIES IN MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE' (R. KIPLING) CARTERTON OPEN GARDENS - SUNDAY JULY 14TH 2002

The local branch of Save The Children and Carterton Town Council teamed up to hold the first ever Open Gardens Day held in the town, which formed part of the local celebrations for the Queen's Jubilee. 14 gardens were recruited to take part by a combination of volunteering or gentle persuasion and they were recruited right across the town. I do not think that any had ever embarked on an event such as this before so, needless to say, they were a little apprehensive as the big day approached. The gardens that took part were an absolute delight and reflected the many hours that were spent by the owners getting them to the peak of perfection. The reactions of all the visitors were extremely positive with some people saying that they had been so impressed by the high standards shown that they were encouraged to take part themselves next year. The day proved to be most successful with over 150 people visiting the gardens, many from outside the town, and £758.31 being raised for Save The Children. I would like to thank the local gardeners who took part, St John's Church for providing the venue for refreshments at short notice and the Town Mayor, Town Clerk and Town Hall staff for all their wonderful assistance and the Save The Children for their support. It is proposed to hold this event again next year so if you would like to be involved please ring me on 01993 842983. GRAHAM EVANS (Press Officer, Save The Children)

LIONS CLUB OF CARTERTON

In the last report you read about their project `Message In A Bottle', which was emergency data in a plastic container which informs of medication and people to contact in case of a medical emergency. It had a great official launch in February with 100 guests including the Chief Fire Officer, Chief Executive of the Ambulance Service and Senior Staff from Thames Valley Police. This project has already had its successes. Another scheme is to part you from unwanted foreign coins to be collected in aid of the Lions International Street Children project. At Easter they made over £800 profit with raffling, treasure hunting and auctioning Easter Eggs so thanks to all the landlords and proprietors of local pubs, clubs and businesses. Other fund raising included the County Youth Orchestra Concert, Bampton May Day, Burford Jubilee Garden Party, jumble sales and a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro! So where do all the funds go that were raised? The Kilimanjaro trek raised £3,100 to the Antony Nolan Trust, a Blood Glucose Meter given to the Carterton Health Centre and donations to charities, local families, schools, nurses and sponsorships to mention a few. If you want more information about the Lions ring Pete 842693 or Mike 842354.

DR MACKENZIE & PARTNERS Carterton Health Centre, Alvescot Road, Carterton, Oxon OX 18 3LJ BEWARE THE YELLOW PERIL!

Common Ra&wort is the most common form of poisoning in livestock and damages wild flowers by smothering. Recognise it by a 3ft upright plant with a woody, reddish stem and a large head of daisy-like yellow petals. It looks pretty but is deadly and needs to be pulled up and then burnt. Seen in fields, roadside verges and in large gardens. I have seen large clumps in a Black Bourton Road site of a demolished house. Keep the Yellow Peril out! LOCAL FIELD NAMES SURVEY

Do the names Grubbis or Crackle Assarts mean anything to you? Do you know the whereabouts of the Swan's Nest, Gigley Green, Paunch Hill or Maggot's Comer? The chances are that few will recognise these places, for they are published on no modern maps, and are known to few local inhabitants excepting those directly involved with work on the land. Yet such names are of immense interest and historical value, for they are amongst the hundreds of thousands of field names currently being recorded at the Oxfordshire County Museum.

The particular value of field names for the archaeologist is that they will often give evidence for the existence of important sites, for example, on the borders of Curbridge and Minster Lovell the tithe map of 1840 marks the name "Hawkesley", a charter dated AD969, which gives the bounds of a great pre-conquest estate centred on Witney, includes at exactly this point the name "hafoces hlewe" (Hawks Low, Barrow or Burial mound). Thus not only is the name itself over a thousand years old, but it also identifies for us the site of an even older feature, a prehistoric burial mound used by the saxons as a landmark on which to align their boundary. The mound is still just visible in the field today. Fields called Round Hill in Enstone and Over Norton also contain prehistoric burial mounds.

Long continued human occupation on a site leads to the darkening of the soil through the build-up of organic materials, and this is often recognised after the site has been abandoned and brought under the plough, by the use of a field name like "Blacklands". Fields of this name in Swalcliffe and Pusey have both yielded vast quantities of Roman pottery. Another field in Swalcliffe is still called "Money Acre", from a coin hoard found there in the early l7th Century. A field in Enstone called "The Town" is still full of the lumps and bumps in the grass marking the foundations of houses in the deserted village of Lower Chalford.

Other field names are of interest to the agricultural historian, in that they record the processes of clearance and cultivation, and the types of crops formerly grown. Names such as Assart or Sart, Breach and Grubbings or Grabbed Ground are particularly characteristic of the formerly wooded lands being brought into cultivation in the great medieval expansion of the 12th and 13th Centuries, while names like "Sainfoin Ground" in Ramsden and "Hopyard" in Chislehampton record crops formerly grown in those parishes.

Many names indicate simply the shape or position of the field. Lanket or Langcut is a common Oxfordshire dialect word for a long, narrow strip of ground, The Triangle is also a common name. Fields known for their infertility are given names like Small Gains, or Hunger Hill. Others in remote corners of the farm have names like Botany Bay, The World's End and Van Dieman's Land.

Quite apart from their intrinsic interest then, field names are a valuable source of information in studies as diverse as archaeology, history, folk-lore and dialect.

The rapidly changing use and ownership of land makes it imperative that these names be recorded quickly or they will be lost forever.

Many Parish surveys in the County have now been completed, a number of them being done by members of the Women's Institute and others, with no previous experience. Working with friends from their own parish they have invariably found the task of interviewing landowners, tenants, farmworkers and village oldest inhabitants and sifting through old maps and documents, very enjoyable.

THE ELEVENTH HOUR ON THE ELEVENTH DAY OF THE ELEVENTH MONTH

Dear Editor. May I take the opportunity to remind all your readers that very soon we will be into November and thinking about the `Eleventh Hour on the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month'. This is when we remember all those who gave their lives in two World Wars, and since then, so that we remain a free country. As the Poppy Appeal Organiser for Carterton area may I thank all those who have given so much help in the past to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and ask for their help and support in the coming months. Carterton is a growing community and we are desperate for House to House Collectors so that we can reach out to everyone. Contact me, telephone 841 115 or at 14 Carters Close, Carterton, if you would like to help in any way and also if you require wreaths etc. Last year we collected F-4,490.61! Let's hope we can improve on that this year. BILL GOSLING PAO.

CARTERTON COUNTY PRIMARY SCHOOL On July 12th the Mayor, Councillor Keith Stone, officially opened the five recently built classrooms in a building erected on the old playground. This was finally completed last year together with the demolition of classrooms added onto the original school, the fabricated building housing the nursery unit and the removal of the temporary classroom by the gate, that used to be the old town library. The whole area is now landscaped including an enclosed playground around the original school which houses the nursery unit which was officially opened by the Mayoress, Mrs Sheila Stone. Invited guests included ex-teachers, ex-pupils and the former headmaster who were invited to an entertainment in the hall by younger members of the school before the official opening ceremony and all guests were then invited to walk through the new building, where the children were still at work (or trying to) in their new classrooms. The guests were then invited to inspect the nursery unit in the renovated former original school building. On display were historical photographs of school pupils past and present and an old punishment book in which the cane was applied to hands, legs or seats for crimes such as `eating fish & chips in class, pouring ink on another pupil's head, stealing school property or just being extremely naughty'. I noticed one boy's name came up frequently so perhaps the cane was not such a deterrent after all! Another book of interest was the head teacher's diary dating from when the school was opened in 1928 until after the war. With many other school memorabilia on display, meeting up with old friends and with unusually fine weather it was a perfect day to celebrate a milestone in the school's history. We publish photographs of the day and we hope in time to include, with kind permission of the head teacher, some of those old photographs that were on display. WM

EDWIN HILES 1911-2002

Edwin Hiles died violently in June at his home in Witney. I never met him but had contact with him through his historical knowledge of Carterton long ago. He sent me some wonderful stories of places and people he knew and I read other recollections of his in the Witney Gazette. Quite a character in many ways. I reprint one of his articles that was included in an earlier edition.

A DAY IN WARTIME CARTERTON After six months training I was posted to the civilian Maintenance Unit, R.A.F. Brize Norton. For my future lodging I chose, from a list, 15 Elm Grove, Brize Norton, simply because from that address in the village it was a short walk to the M.U. Leaving the camp by the Main Entrance in Black Bourton Road I decided to tarry for a time in unknown Carterton. It was June, 1941, and the sun blazed down, tar stuck underfoot, my nose dripped sweat and I yearned for the shade of a tree. I found one with a neatly dressed chap tidying the hedge underneath it, he glanced up and smiled. I seized the opportunity to shelter and converse. His name was Bernard Wilkinson and he worked for the M.U. as a carpenter. He told me he was `down' for Australia after the war and sure enough five years later he sailed away having paid the special £ 10 fare. On a seat by a pub - telling all that it was the Beehive - I sat beside a Mr Handover, professionally garbed, so I was not surprised when I learned he was the local tailor. He offered to bespoke me, West End style, for £12. I pointed out that the Whistle and Flute I was wearing WAS West-End - the Oxford Street Fifty Shilling Tailor - the most my pocket would allow. Gasping I groped my way into the Public Bar of the Beehive pub, the smoke from within (from ten for 6d Navy Cut cigarettes) was as thick as a London fog. Tottering to the counter I ordered and gulped down a pint of mild and bitter for 7d. To my right lounged a florid-faced character who in an instant introduced himself as Joe Hamer. Joe told me - and everyone else in the bar - that he had built the Beehive and when the war was over he was going to build another up in Burford Road. As I stumbled out a lanky lad wearing a L.D.V. armband (Local Defence Volunteer, later the Home Guard - Dad's Army) kindly opened the door for me. I thought it my duty to let him know that the public thought well of his organisation. `We are ready', he replied, `Jerry will run a mile when he sees this!' Reaching out into a corner the youth brought forth the secret weapon; a breadknife tied to a broomstick. Where four roads meet in the village centre I stepped into Player's, a wild west-like store. Mr Player wore glasses with lenses as thick as the glass front of the oil lamps on the Bampton Flier. Strangely he removed them to read, this caused a little girl to ask her mother, `Mummy, why does Mr Player smell the ration book?' The next morning I left my digs for work, during the night soldiers had blocked the road by the Methodist Chapel in Brize Norton. As I showed them my Air Ministry Pass I happened to mention that I was in the RAF. Instantly an elderly Private leapt to his feet, snatched a rifle, and thrust the weapon 2 inches from my chest screaming `Let me shoot the ... !' Those men were from Dunkirk. CARTERTON'S NEW PRIMARY SCHOOL

St John the Evangelist CE School, Shilton Park

Work began in February on the construction of the new Church of England primary school for Carterton in Shilton Park. The innovative building design is now clearly visible and the building is on schedule for completion in December. There will be a special Foundation Stone ceremony in September led by Group Captain Neil Jagger. Meanwhile the development of Carterton continues with three house-building companies now working in the development area. During the next year further phases of houses will be completed and more children will need a school place.

The new school will serve children from the new housing development, and those from a wider area who wish to attend a Church School. It will provide education across the primary age range from 3-11 years. The school will be built initially with 10 classrooms, with the option to extend capacity if needed. Apart from the extensive grounds the school will have a purpose built nursery, a good-sized hall and other specialist rooms for the children.

The new head teacher Tessa Farley has been busy, with the school's Governing Body, appointing the first group of staff for the school. The staff group will grow in numbers each year as the school grows in children. There has been much discussion about the fine details of the building, and now lots of thought is being given to the range of fittings and equipment the school will purchase for use in the new building. It is an exciting opportunity to equip a new school building with some of the best resources for education currently available.

St John's children will wear a distinctive green sweatshirt. The logo will be an eagle as the eagle is the symbol for St John the Evangelist. In September the new school is in fact opening, for a small group of children, in temporary premises at Carterton Community College. We are grateful to our local secondary school in supporting the start of the development of St John's. Around Christmas staff, Governors and parents will be busy preparing for the opening on our new site.

The next term will be an exciting first term for the staff, children, parents and governors as we move towards the establishment of St John the Evangelist Primary School. We are determined to make Carterton proud of its fifth primary school!

Please contact Tessa Farley, Tel: 01993 841357, e-mail: tfarley@alvescot.demon.co.uk or Roger Billings, Tel: 01993 842429, e-mail: RKBCAR@tinyonline.co.uk for further information.
